PARK CITY BRINGS HOME TOP HONORS FROM THE UTAH HOUSING COALITION
October 12, 2010
Three Park City agencies were honored recently for their contributions to expanding housing opportunities for low- and moderate-income households. The Utah Housing Coalition presented awards to Park City Municipal Corporation, Rich Miller of Intermountain Mortgage, and DesignBuildBLUFF at its statewide affordable housing conference on Tuesday, October 5.
Snow Creek Cottages, Park City’s newest workforce housing community, received the Project of the Year award. The award is given annually to an affordable housing project that demonstrates leadership in design, financing and targeting community needs. Park City Municipal developed the Snow Creek Cottages project to address a pressing need for affordable homeownership opportunities for its local workforce. Snow Creek Cottages is a 13-unit sustainable community incorporating renewable energy, green building materials, and energy efficient building technologies. The Utah Housing Coalition also honored Rich Miller, a senior loan officer for Intermountain Mortgage in Park City, for his 15 year commitment to helping low- and moderate-income families realize their dreams of homeownership. Rich was presented with the Creative Use of Funds award which recognizes an organization or individual that best exemplifies creativity in the use of funding and can serve as a model of other communities. Rich researches lending products and works with lenders to educate them about applying these products to financing deed-restricted housing. He has been successful in creating new opportunities for lower income borrowers. Since January 2009 Rich has assisted 14 lower-income households in Park City to become homeowners, including several new homeowners at Snow Creek Cottages. DesignBuildBLUFF, founded by local architect Hank Louis, was honored as the Agency of the Year for its innovative approaches to creating not only housing for an underserved population but also in creating a community of collaboration and understanding. DesignBuildBLUFF is a program for graduate students to realize architecture that nurtures the spirit and improves the lives of all who experience it. Graduate students in architecture spend a semester in Bluff, Utah where they select a Navajo family for whom they design and build a home. Students develop an architectural design solution tailored to the needs of the family with an emphasis on sustainable practices and in the process they learn about teamwork, collaboration and understanding.
